Evolution of magnetic fields in stars across the upper main sequence: I. Catalogue of magnetic field measurements with FORS 1 at the VLT
To properly understand the physics of Ap and Bp stars it is particularlyimportant to identify the origin of their magnetic fields. For that, anaccurate knowledge of the evolutionary state of stars that have ameasured magnetic field is an important diagnostic. Previous resultsbased on a small and possibly biased sample suggest that thedistribution of magnetic stars with mass below 3 M_ȯ in the H-Rdiagram differs from that of normal stars in the same mass range (Hubriget al. 2000). In contrast, higher mass magnetic Bp stars may well occupythe whole main-sequence width (Hubrig, Schöller & North 2005b).In order to rediscuss the evolutionary state of upper main sequencemagnetic stars, we define a larger and bias-free sample of Ap and Bpstars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and reliably determinedlongitudinal magnetic fields. We used FORS 1 at the VLT in itsspectropolarimetric mode to measure the magnetic field in chemicallypeculiar stars where it was unknown or poorly known as yet. In thisfirst paper we present our results of the mean longitudinal magneticfield measurements in 136 stars. Our sample consists of 105 Ap and Bpstars, two PGa stars, 17 HgMn stars, three normal stars, and nine SPBstars. A magnetic field was for the first time detected in 57 Ap and Bpstars, in four HgMn stars, one PGa star, one normal B-type star and fourSPB stars.

The diagnosis of the mean quadratic magnetic field of Ap stars
Aims.We assess the validity of the method of determination of the meanquadratic field modulus and we explore its limits. Methods.Weanalyse high spectral resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of a fewAp stars, and of a superficially normal main-sequence A star, recordedover a broad wavelength range with EMMI at the NTT.Results.Weintroduce a revised form of the regression equation describing thedependence of the second-order moment of the line profiles about theircentre, in natural light, on various parameters of the correspondingtransitions. We show that interpretation of the observed dependencesallows one to determine the mean quadratic magnetic field modulus of thestudied stars, and their v sin i. We explain why the contributions tothe quadratic field of the mean square magnetic field modulus and of themean square longitudinal field cannot in general be disentangled. Forthose stars of the sample that have resolved magnetically split lines,we show that the derived values of the quadratic field are mostlyconsistent with the values of the mean longitudinal magnetic field andof the mean magnetic field modulus at the observed phase. However thereare some hints that they may occasionally slightly underestimate theactual field. This suggests that the method is unlikely to yieldspurious field detections. In addition, we illustrate the importance forthis type of analyses of using, as far as possible, samples of lines ofa single ion, and to specify in the presentation of the results whichion was used.Conclusions.The results presented in this paper lendstrong support to the validity of the quadratic field diagnostic methodto obtain a realistic quantitative characterisation of the magneticfields Ap and related stars.

Decay of Planetary Debris Disks
We report new Spitzer 24 μm photometry of 76 main-sequence A-typestars. We combine these results with previously reported Spitzer 24μm data and 24 and 25 μm photometry from the Infrared SpaceObservatory and the Infrared Astronomy Satellite. The result is a sampleof 266 stars with mass close to 2.5 Msolar, all detected toat least the ~7 σ level relative to their photospheric emission.We culled ages for the entire sample from the literature and/orestimated them using the H-R diagram and isochrones; they range from 5to 850 Myr. We identified excess thermal emission using an internallyderived K-24 (or 25) μm photospheric color and then compared allstars in the sample to that color. Because we have excluded stars withstrong emission lines or extended emission (associated with nearbyinterstellar gas), these excesses are likely to be generated by debrisdisks. Younger stars in the sample exhibit excess thermal emission morefrequently and with higher fractional excess than do the older stars.However, as many as 50% of the younger stars do not show excessemission. The decline in the magnitude of excess emission, for thosestars that show it, has a roughly t0/time dependence, witht0~150 Myr. If anything, stars in binary systems (includingAlgol-type stars) and λ Boo stars show less excess emission thanthe other members of the sample. Our results indicate that (1) there issubstantial variety among debris disks, including that a significantnumber of stars emerge from the protoplanetary stage of evolution withlittle remaining disk in the 10-60 AU region and (2) in addition, it islikely that much of the dust we detect is generated episodically bycollisions of large planetesimals during the planet accretion end game,and that individual events often dominate the radiometric properties ofa debris system. This latter behavior agrees generally with what we knowabout the evolution of the solar system, and also with theoreticalmodels of planetary system formation.

Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). Rotational velocities of A-type stars. I. Measurement of v sin i in the southern hemisphere
Within the scope of a Key Programme determining fundamental parametersof stars observed by HIPPARCOS, spectra of 525 B8 to F2-type starsbrighter than V=8 have been collected at ESO. Fourier transforms ofseveral line profiles in the range 4200-4500 Å are used to derivev sin i from the frequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis ofthe sample indicates that measurement error is a function of v sin i andthis relative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 6%on average. The results obtained are compared with data from theliterature. There is a systematic shift from standard values from\citet{Slk_75}, which are 10 to 12% lower than our findings. Comparisonswith other independent v sin i values tend to prove that those fromSlettebak et al. are underestimated. This effect is attributed to thepresence of binaries in the standard sample of Slettebak et al., and tothe model atmosphere they used. Sixth Catalogue of Fundamental Stars (FK6). Part III. Additional fundamental stars with direct solutions
The FK6 is a suitable combination of the results of the HIPPARCOSastrometry satellite with ground-based data, measured over a longinterval of time and summarized mainly in the FK5. Part III of the FK6(abbreviated FK6(III)) contains additional fundamental stars with directsolutions. Such direct solutions are appropriate for single stars or forobjects which can be treated like single stars. Part III of the FK6contains in total 3272 stars. Their ground-based data stem from thebright extension of the FK5 (735 stars), from the catalogue of remainingSup stars (RSup, 732 stars), and from the faint extension of the FK5(1805 stars). From the 3272 stars in Part III, we have selected 1928objects as "astrometrically excellent stars", since their instantaneousproper motions and their mean (time-averaged) ones do not differsignificantly. Hence most of the astrometrically excellent stars arewell-behaving "single-star candidates" with good astrometric data. Thesestars are most suited for high-precision astrometry. On the other hand,354 of the stars in Part III are Δμ binaries in the sense ofWielen et al. (1999). Many of them are newly discovered probablebinaries with no other hitherto known indication of binarity. The FK6gives, besides the classical "single-star mode" solutions (SI mode),other solutions which take into account the fact that hidden astrometricbinaries among "apparently single-stars" introduce sizable "cosmicerrors" into the quasi-instantaneously measured HIPPARCOS proper motionsand positions. The FK6 gives, in addition to the SI mode, the "long-termprediction (LTP) mode" and the "short-term prediction (STP) mode". TheseLTP and STP modes are on average the most precise solutions forapparently single stars, depending on the epoch difference with respectto the HIPPARCOS epoch of about 1991. The typical mean error of anFK6(III) proper motion in the single-star mode is 0.59 mas/year. This isa factor of 1.34 better than the typical HIPPARCOS errors for thesestars of 0.79 mas/year. In the long-term prediction mode, in whichcosmic errors are taken into account, the FK6(III) proper motions have atypical mean error of 0.93 mas/year, which is by a factor of about 2better than the corresponding error for the HIPPARCOS values of 1.83mas/year (cosmic errors included).

Optical, infrared and millimetre-wave properties of Vega-like systems - IV. Observations of a new sample of candidate Vega-like sources
Photometric observations at optical and near-infrared wavelengths arepresented for members of a new sample of candidate Vega-like systems, ormain sequence stars with excess infrared emission due to circumstellardust. The observations are combined with IRAS fluxes to define thespectral energy distributions of the sources. Most of the sources showonly photospheric emission at near-IR wavelengths, indicating a lack ofhot (~1000K) dust. Mid-infrared spectra are presented for four sourcesfrom the sample. One of them, HD 150193, shows strong silicate emission,while another, HD 176363, was not detected. The spectra of two starsfrom our previous sample of Vega-like sources both show UIR-bandemission, attributed to hydrocarbon materials. Detailed comparisons ofthe optical and IRAS positions suggest that in some cases the IRASsource is not physically associated with the visible star. Alternativeassociations are suggested for several of these sources. Fractionalexcess luminosities are derived from the observed spectral energydistributions. The values found are comparable to those measuredpreviously for other Vega-like sources.

Radial velocities of HIPPARCOS southern B8-F2 type stars
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of B8-F2 type starsobserved by the Hipparcos satellite. Observations were obtained withinthe framework of an ESO key-program. Radial velocities have beenmeasured using a cross-correlation method, the templates being a grid ofsynthetic spectra. The obtained precision depends on effectivetemperature and projected rotational velocity of the star as well as ona possible asymmetry of the correlation peak generally due to secondarycomponents. New spectroscopic binaries have been detected from theseasymmetries and the variability of the measured radial velocity.Simulations of binary and triple systems have been performed. Forbinaries our results have been compared with Hipparcos binary data.Adding the variable radial velocities, the minimum binary fraction hasbeen found 60% for physical systems. Radial velocities have beendetermined for 581 B8-F2 stars, 159 being new. Taking into accountpublished radial velocities, 39% south A-type stars with V magnitudelower than 7.5 have a radial velocity. We present preliminary results of our search for circumstellarabsorption features in the Ca K lines based on high S/N observationsobtained with the ESO CAT/CES system.

Candidate Main-Sequence Stars with Debris Disks: A New Sample of Vega-like Sources
Vega-like sources are main-sequence stars that exhibit IR fluxes inexcess of expectations for stellar photospheres, most likely due toreradiation of stellar emission intercepted by orbiting dust grains. Wehave identified a large sample of main-sequence stars with possibleexcess IR radiation by cross-correlating the Michigan Catalog ofTwo-dimensional Spectral Types for the HD Stars with the IRAS FaintSource Survey Catalog. Some 60 of these Vega-like sources were not foundduring previous surveys of the IRAS database, the majority of whichemployed the lower sensitivity Point Source Catalog. Here, we providedetails of our search strategy, together with a preliminary examinationof the full sample of Vega-like sources.

A catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations: 1996 edition
A fifth Edition of the Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations is presentedherewith. It contains 5946 determinations for 3247 stars, including 751stars in 84 associations, clusters or galaxies. The literature iscomplete up to December 1995. The 700 bibliographical referencescorrespond to [Fe/H] determinations obtained from high resolutionspectroscopic observations and detailed analyses, most of them carriedout with the help of model-atmospheres. Abundance anomalies in main sequence A stars. III. Nitrogen and sulphur.
Nitrogen and sulphur abundances in 15 sharp-lined `normal' main sequenceA stars are determined from new high-resolution CCD spectra. Non-LTEeffects are taken into account. Nitrogen abundances are distributed overan interval of 0.5dex around the solar value of 8.05. Non-LTE abundancecorrections range from -0.2 to -1.2dex. Sulphur is overabundant withrespect to the sun by 0.1 to 0.6dex in all program stars. Taking non-LTEeffects into account reduces the overabundances, but cannot remove thementirely; non-LTE abundance corrections {DELTA}logɛ aretypically -0.1dex. Comparison with previously derived carbon abundancesreveals that carbon and nitrogen behave very similarly in each star.Thus the anticorrelation of [C/Si] with [Si/H] found by Holweger (1992,Lecture Notes in Physics Vol. 401, eds. U. Heber and C.S. Jeffery, p.48) is also true for [N/Si]. For sulphur a similar anticorrelation isalso possible.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Identification of the 1600A feature in Lambda Bootis stars
The nature of the absoprtion feature near 1600A in λ Bootisstars, which is one of the strongest features in these objects, is alongstanding puzzle. In this study we demonstrate that it is caused byquasimolecular absorption leading to a satellite in the Lyman αprofile due to perturbations by neutral hydrogen. This feature has alsobeen observed in the hydrogen-rich DA white dwarfs. The satellite is notobservable in normal A stars because of the extremely strong distortionof the UV flux by metal lines, especially of C, Si, and Fe. Although theC abundance seems to be close to solar in λ Bootis stars, the Si,Fe, and other metal abundances are sufficiently reduced to make thefeature visible. For the same reason the feature is conspicuous inmetal-deficient horizontal branch stars of spectral type A.

Variation of oxygen lines in magnetic AP stars
The red lines of the O I multiplet at lambda 7773 A are observed at highresolution and their rotational variation is recorded for a sample ofnine magnetic Ap stars. These lines are found to be weaker than fornormal Ap stars. The irregular distribution of oxygen on the stellarsurface is connected to the magnetic geometry for the stars HD 25823 (41Tau), HD 74521 (49 Cnc), HD 112185 (epsilon UMa), HD 112413(alpha2 CVn), and HD 125248 (CS Vir). For four of thesestars, it is clearly established that oxygen is concentrated around amagnetic polar region. The interpretation of the observed trends addsnew constraints to the theory of radiative diffusion of oxygen in Apstars.

Improved Mean Positions and Proper Motions for the 995 FK4 Sup Stars not Included in the FK5 Extension

A catalogue of Fe/H determinations - 1991 edition
A revised version of the catalog of Fe/H determinations published by G.Cayrel et al. (1985) is presented. The catalog contains 3252 Fe/Hdeterminations for 1676 stars. The literature is complete up to December1990. The catalog includes only Fe/H determinations obtained from highresolution spectroscopic observations based on detailed spectroscopicanalyses, most of them carried out with model atmospheres. The catalogcontains a good number of Fe/H determinations for stars from open andglobular clusters and for some supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds.

An optical search for Beta Pictoris-like disks around nearby stars
A coronagraphic survey of more than one hundred stars has been carriedout in a search at optical wavelengths for circumstellar materialsimilar to that found in the Beta Pictoris disk. The survey stars wereprimarily dwarfs in the spectral range A to K and most were closer than100 pc. No evidence of circumstellar material was found around any ofthe stars, suggesting that Beta Pictoris is an abnormal object,surrounded by an unusually large amount of optically scatteringmaterial.

The inhomogeneous distribution of oxygen on the surface of the magnetic AP star HD 125248
The distribution of oxygen on the surface of the magnetic Ap star HD125248 has been found to be strongly inhomogeneous. The averageabundance of oxygen over a stellar hemisphere varies by a factor of 10throughout the rotation cycle of the star. Oxygen appears to be moreabundant close to the positive magnetic pole of HD 125248, like the rareearths and unlike chromium and silicon. This discovery contradictsprevious claims that large inhomogeneities of oxygen abundance do notoccur on the surface of magnetic Ap stars. It provides a new handle totackle the question of the origin of the abundance peculiarities inthese objects.

AP stars with resolved magnetically split lines
New high-resolution spectroscopic observations of Ap stars with resolvedmagnetically split spectral lines are presented. Six new such stars havebeen discovered: HD 2453, HD 9996, HD 18078, HD 50169, HD 137949, and HD192678. This raises the total number of known Ap stars with resolvedmagnetically split lines to 21. The spectral line profiles observed intwo more stars, HD 111133 and HD 147010, are strongly affected by themagnetic field, but they are not fully resolved, due to nonnegligiblerotational Doppler effect. Observations of fairly sharp-lined Ap starswhose lines are unresolved are also presented. The relative differencebetween the equivalent widths of the Fe II lines 6147.7 A and 6149.2 Ais shown to increase with the mean magnetic field modulus. The existenceof a simple, unambiguous correlation between the mean magnetic fieldmodulus and the index Z of Geneva photometry, which had previously beenadvocated, is not confirmed. At most, stars with large negative valuesof Z may be more prone to have strong magnetic fields, but the evidencefor this is not statistically strong.

High-resolution spectrometry of Lambda Bootis stars - Selected diagnostic lines and possible detection of a Beta Pic-type shell star
CCD observations of diagnostic features in the optical spectra of eightsouthern Lambda Boo stars and one normal A star are presented. Thegeneral weakness of MgII 4481A is confirmed, yet a wide range instrength and magnesium abundance exists. Narrow interstellar orcircumstellar absorption components of NaI 5890 + 5896A are detected inthree stars; in HR 4881 they exceed in strength those of the shell starBeta Pictoris and are probably of circumstellar origin. HR 4881 alsoexhibits a conspicuous absorption feature in CaII 3933A, resembling BetaPic in appearance.

AP stars with resolved Zeeman split lines
High-resolution, high SNR observations of a sample of sharp-lined Astars and of Ap stars showing resolved Zeeman split lines are presented.The Fe II lines 6147.7 A and 6149.2 A unexpectedly appear to beasymmetric in all stars where they are resolved. The blue component ofthe 6149.2 line, which is a Zeeman doublet, is deeper and narrower thanits red component. For line 6147.7, whose Zeeman pattern does not differmuch from a quadruplet, the red components are deeper than the blueones. It is shown that a partial Paschen-Back effect can account forthese properties. The potential implications of this finding for studiesof magnetic Ap stars are discussed.

The magnetic field of the AM star Omicron Pegasi
Evidence is presented that the hot Am star Omicron Peg (= HD 214994) hasa magnetic field of the order of 2 kG, with a complex structure. Twoindependent approaches support this conclusion. The first one is ananalysis by the Stenflo-Lindegren (1977) technique of the widths of astatistical sample of lines. The other relies on a line-intensityanomaly that is found in magnetic stars. The implications of thisprobable detection of a field in a member of a class of stars that werenot previously known as magnetic is discussed.

Abundance anomalies in Main Sequence A stars. I - Iron and titanium
Iron and titanium abundances were derived for 16 sharp-lined MainSequence A stars based on high-resolution spectra. Estimates were madeof helium abundances and rotational velocities. The iron and titaniumanomalies of HR 5959 and Vega were established. The abundances of theother stars are described by a Gaussian distribution with a standarddeviation of 0.16 dex and a mean value of 7.58.

The early A type stars - Refined MK classification, confrontation with Stroemgren photometry, and the effects of rotation
The MK classification system for the early A-type stars is refined, anda parallel system of standards for the broad-lined stars is introduced.With this improved system, stars may be classified with significantlygreater precision than before. It is shown that spectral types in thissystem are not systematically affected by rotational line broadening. Atotal of 372 early A-type stars are classified, and a confrontation ofthese spectral types with Stroemgren photometry reveals a number ofsystematic photometric effects of rotation. In particular, high v sin istars are systematically redder than low v sin i stars of the samespectral type, and the beta index is weakened by rotation. It isconcluded that precise spectral classification in conjunction withStroemgren and H-beta photometry can potentially provide a valuablecheck and input to the theory of the atmospheres of rotating stars.

Compositional differences among 'normal' A stars inferred from high-resolution spectroscopy
A previous study of sharp-lined B 9.5-A 2 V stars classified as normalto ten additional objects, including Sirius (A 1 Vm) is extended. Theoccurrence of significant star-to-star abundance variations isconfirmed. Elements studied are He, C, Mg, Ti, Fe, and Ba. Variations ofthe iron group and of magnesium or barium are generally correlated, butcarbon varies independently. Anomalously strong He I lines are found inHR 3963 (A 0 V), which may be an intermediate helium star. Another star(HR 4138) with very sharp lines has been found.

The Sirius supercluster
Photometric data on the chemical composition of 927 A stars in the UrsaMajor stream, called the Sirius supercluster, were used to estimate theage and place of formation of the objects. The stars studied are in thesolar neighborhood and have been observed to be co-moving in a velocityellipsoid with a (U, V) velocity of 10.3 km/sec and concentrated in aspatial volume less than 10 pc across. The Stromgren and Geneva systemphotometric data show that the supercluster is homogeneous in chemicalcontent, although the value of the forbidden Fe/H ratio could not beprecisely determined. The supercluster age is projected to be from260-620 Myr, with the origin having been in the Carina spiral arm of theGalaxy.
